Janney Automatic Railway Coupler
American milestone: 1873 · Eli H. Janney · Alexandria, Virginia
Status: Replacement candidate. Final number pending chronology audit.
Why it belongs in America 250
Eli H. Janney received U.S. Patent 138,405 in 1873 for his improved railroad car coupling. The knuckle-coupler concept became a major step toward safer, faster coupling of railway cars and later automatic-coupler standards.
Connection to automation
The design allowed cars to couple mechanically on contact, reducing dangerous manual coupling work and standardizing a critical railroad operation.
