Automation History LLC is an independent educational initiative dedicated to exploring and preserving the history of invention, engineering, automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and the technologies that have shaped human civilization.
Our purpose is not simply to document individual inventions. It is to explore the connections between them—how ideas developed thousands of years ago influenced later technologies, and how those accumulated discoveries became the foundation of the automated world around us today.
Every machine has a history. Every breakthrough has a story. Every generation builds upon the last.
WHY AUTOMATION HISTORY EXISTS
Understanding the Present by Exploring the Past
Modern automation did not begin with computers, industrial robots, programmable logic controllers, or artificial intelligence.
Its foundations were built gradually across thousands of years. Ancient irrigation systems demonstrated how natural forces could perform useful work. Water clocks introduced mechanisms capable of regulating processes over time. Gears, cams, mills, and mechanical devices transformed motion into repeatable operations.
Steam power expanded the scale of mechanization. Electricity, relays, computers, programmable controllers, robotics, sensors, software, and artificial intelligence added new layers of control, information, and intelligence.
Today, those ideas converge in automated factories, intelligent warehouses, autonomous machines, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
Yet as technology advances, the people, inventions, experiments, failures, and incremental improvements behind it can easily be forgotten.
Automation History LLC was created to preserve those stories and explore the connections between the technologies of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER & AUTHOR
Andrew Miller

Automation History LLC was founded by Andrew Miller, a United States Marine Corps veteran, automation professional, supervisor, independent researcher, author, and lifelong learner with a deep interest in understanding how technology has shaped human civilization.
Andrew's professional background combines military leadership with more than a decade of hands-on experience in warehouse operations, industrial automation, robotics, maintenance, and operational leadership. After serving honorably in the United States Marine Corps as a Non-Commissioned Officer, he carried the discipline, accountability, problem-solving mindset, and leadership principles developed in the Marine Corps into his civilian career.
He later spent approximately 12 years with PepsiCo in the Orlando, Florida area, working in warehouse and automation-focused environments where he developed extensive hands-on experience with automated material-handling systems, robotics, maintenance operations, reliability, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and the technologies that support modern distribution and manufacturing.
During his time with PepsiCo, Andrew became a subject matter expert in automation and robotics and was trusted to travel to other facilities to help train and support technical teams. His work included teaching employees how to safely operate robotic systems, perform diagnostics and troubleshooting, complete disassembly and reassembly, carry out general repairs, and better understand the systems they were responsible for maintaining.
He also focused on improving repair methods by identifying more efficient, time-conscious, and cost-effective approaches to maintenance. The goal was not simply to repair equipment, but to reduce unnecessary downtime, restore systems to operation more quickly, improve reliability, and protect overall production throughput.
Today, Andrew continues to work directly in warehouse automation, where modern robotics, automated material movement, controls, maintenance, reliability, and logistics systems come together in real-world operations. That continuing industry experience gives him a practical perspective on how today's automated systems function and how many of their underlying principles developed over generations.
Working around modern automated systems created an appreciation for something that can easily be overlooked: even the most advanced machine is built upon generations of earlier ideas.
A modern automated system may incorporate sensors, motors, electrical controls, mechanical systems, computers, software, industrial networks, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Each of those technologies has its own history, and each exists because earlier inventors, engineers, scientists, craftspeople, technicians, and problem-solvers solved challenges that allowed the next generation to move forward.
Automation History grew from a fascination with understanding how technologies connect across time—how the innovations of the past became the foundations of the present, and how today's technologies may influence what comes next.
THE JOURNEY
From Military Service to Modern Automation
United States Marine Corps
Before his career in industrial automation, Andrew served honorably in the United States Marine Corps as a Non-Commissioned Officer.
Military service helped develop an approach centered on leadership, discipline, responsibility, adaptability, teamwork, and problem-solving—principles that later carried into his professional career and the development of Automation History LLC.
Technical & Industrial Career
Following military service, Andrew pursued technical and industrial work before building a career around increasingly sophisticated automated systems, manufacturing operations, robotics, maintenance, reliability, and operations leadership.
This experience provides a practical perspective on the machines and technologies that Automation History explores.
Research, Writing & Education
Professional experience eventually led to a larger question: where did automation actually begin?
That curiosity developed into independent research, writing, educational content, the History of Automation book series, and ultimately AutomationHistory.com.
A LIFELONG LEARNER
Exploring Technology Without Claiming to Know Everything
Andrew does not present himself as a historian.
Automation History is being built from the perspective of an industry professional and lifelong learner fascinated by the history of technology and the connections between inventions across time.
One question became particularly important:
Where did automation actually begin?
Modern discussions about automation often begin with industrial robots, computers, programmable logic controllers, artificial intelligence, or autonomous systems.
Exploring the subject reveals a much longer story.
The principles behind automation can be found in ancient irrigation systems, water clocks, gears, cams, automata, mechanical clocks, mills, steam engines, textile machinery, electrical controls, assembly lines, computing, robotics, and countless other innovations.
Some inventions disappeared. Others were improved. Some ideas traveled between civilizations. Others were independently rediscovered. Occasionally, an invention created possibilities its original creator could never have imagined.

A mechanical concept developed centuries ago may still exist inside a modern robot. An early system for controlling water can demonstrate principles recognizable in modern process automation. Punched-card machinery helped demonstrate programmable control long before electronic computers.
