Grain Elevator

American milestone: 1842 · Joseph Dart · Buffalo, New York

Status: Replacement candidate. Final number pending chronology audit.

Why it belongs in America 250

Joseph Dart's 1842 Buffalo grain elevator mechanized the transfer of bulk grain between ships and storage. Historic American Engineering Record research traces Buffalo's later grain-elevator system to the principles established by Dart's first waterfront elevator.

Connection to automation

Powered lifting and bulk handling replaced much manual transfer work and became foundational to automated grain terminals and modern bulk-material logistics.
