Cyclotron
American milestone: 1930–1931 · Ernest O. Lawrence · University of California, Berkeley
Status: Replacement candidate. Final number pending chronology audit.
Why it belongs in America 250
Ernest Lawrence developed the cyclotron at the University of California, Berkeley. The machine used a magnetic field and alternating electric fields to accelerate charged particles repeatedly through a compact circular path.
Connection to automation
The cyclotron depended on precisely coordinated electromagnetic control and instrumentation and became foundational to nuclear physics, isotope production and later accelerator technology.
