American milestone: 1907–1909 · Leo Baekeland · Yonkers, New York

Status: Replacement candidate. Final number pending chronology audit.

Why it belongs in America 250

Belgian-born American chemist Leo Baekeland developed Bakelite in his Yonkers laboratory. By controlling the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde under heat and pressure, he created a moldable thermosetting material with valuable electrical and heat-resistant properties.

Connection to automation

Bakelite became important in electrical switches, housings, insulators and other mass-produced components. Its moldability helped manufacturers standardize parts for the expanding electrical and machine age.
