Automatic Building Temperature Control

American milestone: 1880s · Warren S. Johnson · Wisconsin

Status: Replacement candidate. Final number pending chronology audit.

Why it belongs in America 250

Warren S. Johnson developed electric temperature indication and increasingly automatic building-temperature regulation in Wisconsin. His 1888 U.S. patent described a system for automatic regulation of heat using electrical control and fluid pressure.

Connection to automation

Johnson's systems introduced feedback-based environmental control into buildings, a direct ancestor of automated HVAC control and building-management systems.
