Automatic Flour Mill

American milestone: 1780s · Oliver Evans · Delaware/Pennsylvania

Status: Replacement candidate. Final America 250 number will be assigned after the chronology audit.

Why it belongs in America 250

Oliver Evans redesigned flour milling as an integrated continuous process. Beginning in the 1780s, his system used conveyors, elevators and other mechanical devices to move grain and flour between stages with far less manual handling. The National Park Service describes Evans's mill as essentially automating the entire flour-milling process.

Connection to automation

The system linked separate production steps into a coordinated material-flow process, making it an early American example of process automation and continuous manufacturing.
