Gyroscopic Aircraft Autopilot

American milestone: 1910s–1920s · Lawrence and Elmer Sperry · United States

Status: Replacement candidate. Final number pending chronology audit.

Why it belongs in America 250

The Sperry family developed gyroscopic stabilization and automatic-pilot systems that could hold an aircraft's attitude and heading without continuous manual control. These systems became an important American contribution to automated flight.

Connection to automation

The autopilot is a direct feedback-control system: gyroscopes measure aircraft motion, control mechanisms compare it with a desired condition, and actuators make corrections.
